A Peek At My Week! #30

Good morning, friends and fans!

Welcome to another “Peek Into My Week”, a behind the scenes look into the (I hope) noteworthy events in my past week – November 22, 2021!

Here are some things that happened this past week, starting at the top, with writing-related news:

Writing & Publishing News:

Last Monday I updated the covers and promotional posters for the Quantum Series, Space Sucks and Lifetime using the brilliant new covers designed by Brandon Mullins of Moon Books Publishing (the ones I told you about in last week’s Peek @ My Week)! This past week, the novelette “Opsaal” also debuted in eBook and paperback format.

I’m really very happy with the new covers and the posters that resulted from them! They really stand out!
That done, I set about updating the website as well as updating the covers for these books on Smashwords, Draft2Digital and the like. It might take a little longer for the changes to reflect on Kindle and CreateSpace etc. but rest assured, they will get there!
News About Project Dolly:
On Friday I did some more work on Dolly, my 1962 VW Beetle. This time I stripped the old heat exchangers off the exhaust J-tubes to lighten them. I have no need of the heat exchangers since that part of the system no longer works due to a large number of missing hoses, cables and levers etc. which operated it – besides, even when these old Beetle heater and fan systems did work, they were pretty useless and made the inside of the car smell like oil. Rather than have the car lugging around a couple of extra kilos of dead weight, I decided to strip out the cores and dump the excess. I painted the pipes and the aluminum cladding and vanes with black engine paint – they look really nice now, very much like some old motorcycle exhausts I saw before! Then I made brackets to replace the ones on the outer skin I’d removed, to support the lower engine cooling tins. You can see it all in the next set of photos.

I’m still waiting expectantly for the parts I ordered to arrive; namely a set of new J-tubes (which don’t have the aluminum vanes and cladding on) and a set of new nylon pushrod tubes, but these just seem to be taking their sweet time about it! I mean, I’ve been waiting since August for these things – and not just waiting, but working my ass off to get everything done and ready before they arrive – and now I’m already just about done, there’s still no sign of them! According to the supplier, they’re at Customs, but that information is a week old now – I’ll definitely be calling them again come the 22nd!

The outstanding items are causing a delay, in fact, I’m done with most of the work already, with only a few small things left to do before I can reassemble everything in the car… but now I have to wait before I can continue! In short, I got impatient and stripped down the original J-tubes – they still work fine, they’re a little heavier than the new ones I ordered, but the extra cladding will help suppress noise a bit, and the vanes will help cool the exhaust some. At least they’re quite a bit lighter with the outer ducting removed – plus, they look nicer this way! In the third image you can see the space where the pushrod tubes are supposed to go – and it’s only after they’ve been fitted that I can install the pushrods and rockers and call the engine “done”.

Meanwhile, if the pushrod tubes take much longer to arrive, I’m going to have to invent my own replacements for those as well! (Not that I don’t already have a few ideas to do that!) I can’t go on like this without a car for much longer! Stuff needs doing – and I need wheels to be able to do it! People are getting sick of me bugging them for special lifts to get this or that, as well-intentioned as they may be!

This weekend I saw to a few loose ends, but hardly anything worth mentioning here – or sharing pictures of! Once again I treated myself to a well-earned Sunday in pajamas!

With that, I’m all out of news for this week! I wish you all a wonderful, restful day – and until next time, keep reading!

Cheers!
