African Assignment

Twilight Zone Meets Alfred Hitchcock

African Assignment is a collection of short stories by South African writer Theo Engela, and set in the South African bushveld and depicts South African society of the 1950’s. Suspense, wonderment, mystery, a sense of adventure, with just a touch of humor offer a fresh glimpse at a world now vanished, where crime could still be perfect and the world lived under the ever-present weight of the Cold War.

Theo Engela’s short stories were written during the 1950’s and 60’s, using imagery and place names unfamiliar to folk living in the 21st century. Mesmerizing African folklore and almost-vanished cultures stand side by side. Rounded off in his own unique style, he displays a biting sense of humor and irony in his work, which would probably not seem out of place in a Hitchcock serial or even in the Twilight Zone.

Most of the tales in this book were dramatized and broadcast on the late lamented Springbok Radio during the 1960s and 70’s.

This book, written by Christina Engela’s father Theo, was edited by Christina Engela and is available on Amazon in eBook and paperback format, and via Hally Park Publishers in South Africa.
