 COLLABORATIONS

Collaboration happens when two or more people work together to create one product or item that is the result of the group effort. Often the goal of collaboration between authors is to contribute to an end item that will increase their own exposure and help draw attention to their own brand and other works as well. Sometimes writers will also work together on a project out of goodwill or charity – or even friendship – sometimes event without receiving public credit or remuneration for their work. Christina Engela has on occasion collaborated with other writers to help them create unique works! Below are a few examples.

“Satanism: The Acid Test” (with The Alternative Religions Forum):

In 2012, Christina was a member of the Executive Committee of SAPRA (the South African Pagan Rights Alliance). She helped establish a working group called the Alternative Religions Forum (ARF) whose goal was to collaborate on creating a working document or academic paper intended to demystify Pagan and other occult beliefs and practices and to defuse the rising tide of “satanic panic hysteria” in South Africa at the time. Christina collaborated by doing the bulk of the research for the document as well as writing, formatting and finalizing the finished document.

The result was an over 400 pages long academic paper called “Satanism: The Acid Test”. Together with a number of PowerPoint presentations based on the paper, this was presented to a South African government commission on religious freedom in 2013 and also disseminated to local and international media groups, newspapers, law enforcement agencies as well as the United Nations. “The Stat Document” as it is called in brief, is the only peer-reviewed paper of its kind in the world today – because it not only received peer review from academics in the field of religious and cultural studies, but also endorsement from organizations and bodies within the broader international occult community.

“The Rose Project” (with Deena Larsen):

In 2013-14, Christina collaborated with American writer in electronic literature Deena Larsen, to translate her work, ‘The Rose Project‘ into Afrikaans, in order to expand its possible reach and target market. Deena was on holiday in the city for the second time, and it was a golden opportunity!

“Negative Wonderland” (with Alex S. Johnson):

In March 2016, Christina collaborated with American horror writer Alex S. Johnson in writing a short story called ‘Negative Wonderland‘ for Horror-Addicts, and again in December 2016 on a second story called ‘Space Cases’.

CONTRIBUTIONS

As with most writers, the opportunity to have any material included in anthologies put out by publishers of any kind is appealing because this helps to gain exposure for the writer! In this sense, her publishing journey began in mid 2014 with “Words of Wisdom” – an anthology of South African poetry commissioned by the Gauteng Department of Education.

Below is a list of anthologies to which Christina Engela contributed in one way or another – be it in the form of content (a short story or poem, foreword or introduction) or cover design etc.
