What’s The Story About?
“Dead Man’s Hammer” is a sci-fi story set in the distant future. It is a future in which sometimes, luckily for Gary Beck, death is just a temporary inconvenience. Deanna is just another third-rate colony on the outskirts of the Terran Empire – with a not entirely unflattering reputation for being the center of the universe as far as weirdness is concerned – and as boring a lump of rock as could be expected. That is, until the day that Gary Beck, aka Beck the Badfeller, runs over an obsidian crow with his jeepo on the highway to San Fedora and doesn’t have a spare tire. Things pretty much go down hill from there.
An assassin had come to Atro City – a professional. No, scratch that – a professional’s professional: she was the worst possible combination – being that she took pride in her work, enjoyed what she did for a living, and above all, she was bloody good at it – and also utterly and absolutely terrifying. This time unfortunately, it was absolutely 100 percent personal: there was the small matter of a score which had to be settled. The lady was refined and pretty, but as poets might say, beauty can be deceiving – and the same poets who described Helen of Troy as the face that launched a thousand ships, might have written about Villainessa Tittle as the bitch that sank them. For Peg, the Sheriff of Atro City; a certain perambulatory, sentient plant called Fred; a certain omniscient Time Agent with a fondness for historical figures, Beck’s girlfriend and former C.I.A. agent, Cindy-Mei Winter – and Beck himself – this chick was the worst kind of bad news. Why, oh why was he always on the receiving end of other people’s grudges?
Beck the Badfeller – Deanna’s most famous bounty hunter – had been murdered, and it was up to Cindy-Mei Winter, Sheriff Peg, Deputy Mike, Fred the Arborian – and Gary Beck himself – to solve the case. After all, Gary wasn’t the sort to take his death lying down – and Deanna’s most famous bounty hunter had a reputation to uphold.
Known for her Galaxii Series, the third title in her Quantum Series, “Dead Man’s Hammer“, builds on the set of lifelike, realistic characters introduced in the previous books, including Cindy-Mei Winter, Beck the Badfeller, Sheriff Peg, the Grauffis sisters, the Skeggs Valley Dynamite Fishing Club, and Fred – a walking, talking alien plant with chutzpah and a talent for camouflage.
