Warmest Greetings!
Hail and welcome to the home page of Schtick! Webzine! I’m your host, Christina Engela, and together we will travel the stars, trip the light fantastic, and have many tantalizing adventures together! In the course of the first and subsequent issues, I’ll proudly present stories and poems by a diverse group of writers from all over the world!
If you want to skip to the really good stuff, you can follow the links below to view the linked issues: If you’d like to see the necessary “about” stuff, just so we’re all on the same page with regard to Schtick! and the sort of content you can expect to see within its awe-inspiring pages, just skip past the buttons to read the text below!
What Is Schtick Webzine About?
According to contemporary lore (i.e. that paragon of knowledge – Wikipedia) a shtick is “a comic theme or gimmick.
The word entered the English language from the Yiddish shtik, in turn derived from German Stück and Polish sztuka, all meaning “piece”, “thing” or “theatre play”; note that “Theaterstück” is the German word for play. The English word “piece” is sometimes used in a similar context.”
In those terms, this webzine aims to be a platform firstly for exposure where writers of sci-fi and transgressive fiction can show their work, and for readers and fans of these genres to more easily find them!
Sci-fi: Science Fiction is a genre of speculative fiction which typically deals with imaginative and futuristic concepts such as advanced science and technology, space exploration, time travel, parallel universes, extra-terrestrial life, sentient artificial intelligence, cybernetics, certain forms of immortality and etc.
Transgressive fiction: A genre of literature which focuses on characters who feel confined by the norms and expectations of society and who break free of those confines in unusual or illicit ways.
Schtick! Webzine then, focuses on transgressive sci-fi, but will also share the limelight with material which dances in the fringes to the side of that overlap.
The creator of Schtick! Webzine is author Christina Engela, herself a writer in the genres of sci-fi, transgressive fiction and, occasionally, horror.
Schtick! Webzine is indie published and compiled and released quarterly. The first issue will be made available in January 2023 in eBook format via KDP/Amazon, with full writing credit being given to contributing authors..
Submissions for future issues are always open and there are no submission fees, nor limits to how many items a single author can submit. Submitting authors will not be paid for their submissions. Submission does not guarantee acceptance or that submitted items will appear in future issues of Schtick!
Submissions are now open, and should be sent to me in Word (doc or docx) format.
Ad space will also be made available to interested writing-related parties, with fees based on the size and placement of the ad (full page, half page, quarter page etc.). For enquiries re. ads, contact me.
In the foreseeable future, there might also be annual collections published as well, but more about that later!
The point of this whole exercise will be to increase reading exposure for other indie authors and new, up and coming authors looking for more connection with an audience.
Looking forward to reading your submissions!
