Playing Monopoly
According to critics of indie authors (strangely enough, from some within the indie author “community”) the use of free AI-generated cover images is “ripping off” artists who would otherwise receive payment for creating those covers.
Feeling Threatened?
When all is said and done, this isn’t about other people’s copyright – it’s about what’s paid, and what’s free – and who can afford to be part of the ‘club’. Ultimately, it’s about wealthier indies thinning out the competition to get to, or stay on top.
Artificial Intelligence vs Natural Stupidity
This looming witch hunt seems to me more about forcing authors to make use of paid services and relinquishing their creative freedom and independence than anything else – an extension and continuation of the age-old effort to gentrify the writing profession, and to make it back into a rich person’s hobby.
