A Unique & Different Approach To Child Bullying: “Other Kids Are Kids Almost Just Like You”

I was so pleased to see this review of “Other Kids Are Kids Almost Just Like You” yesterday! 🙂

Other Kids Are Kids Almost Just Like You” by Christina Engela celebrates the concept of diversity and how precious every child is.

This book is about intolerance, diversity, and bullying and encourages readers to accept everyone, irrespective of their differences based on gender, race, and color. The book also emphasizes being compassionate to everyone, regardless of their color, status, and gender.

Bullying and intolerance are relevant topics in today’s times and this book is good for read-aloud sessions in classrooms to help children be more tolerant and compassionate towards others. The illustrations lend clarity to the concept and help readers connect with the author’s words.

The author’s approach to the subject is unique and different, and she makes the book appealing to children with the help of colorful illustrations. It is a good book to teach children to be kind and compassionate. 5 stars” – Mamta Madhavan for Readers’ Favorite, Oct 17, 2019

FAQ’s Answered #1: Why Do I Write About LGBT People?

I thought it might be nice to post my replies to FAQ (frequently asked questions) on my website, so here goes: Today I answer the question “Why do I write about LGBT people?“, asked by Trina Williams from Cape Town.

I write sci-fi stories, and over the years, I’ve been occasionally accused of humor – and even wit. Sometimes my work has been rather flatteringly compared to several well-known authors in humor, fantasy and sci-fi – not that it’s ever gone to my head – one day if my books ever start making me actual money, it might. For now however, I concentrate on telling my stories – and telling others about them.

Unlike any of the authors I’ve been compared to however, I write stories that feature LGBT characters in a positive, affirming light. Some of my main characters are like me – in one or more times in my own life – lesbian, gay, bi, or transgender. One of those characters is even a plant – and another is a talking cat – not that I am or have been one of those before, but oh well, now you can see what I mean by humor!
The question I’m going to explore with you today is “Why“?

Panic! Horror In Space – A Voyage Of Terrifying Misadventure!

About “Panic! Horror In Space” by Christina Engela – a sci-fi-horror series.

Panic! Horror In Space‘ is a series of science-fiction-horror stories featuring regular characters, with the occasional introduction of new characters or settings. The premise of the concept was to create a horror-sci-fi story in a series of connected short fiction installments.

While on an otherwise routine deep-space mission to chart new territory on the frontier of unknown space, the Pioneer Fleet starship Mercury is probably the unluckiest ship in history. Not once, not twice, but many times over, the same hapless crew – give or take a few dozen casualties – on a supposed voyage of deep space exploration, stumble into the weird, wake the creepy and trip over the downright terrifying and possibly even supernatural… More

“Loderunner” – A Spotlight

Loderunner” is the fourth book in the the Quantum Series by Christina Engela.

Set after the third book (‘Dead Man’s Hammer’) ‘Loderunner’ introduces new characters and a whole new adventure starting on the by now familiar Terran colony world of Deanna. Leading characters the reader may be familiar with from previous titles, such as Gary Beck, play cameo and supporting roles in ‘Loderunner’. The lead in this story is a struggling private investigator by the name of Timaset Skooch, who at the start of the story wins a small pile of loot …in a game of Uno. Part of the pot turns out to be a decrepit old cargo space ship called the Celeste (any alarms going off yet?) which Skooch decides to take out on a voyage with its eccentric and dysfunctional crew across the remotest reaches of Terran space to seek their fortune in the ultimate get-rich-quick scheme. “Prodigal Sun”: Quantum Series Book 5

Prodigal Sun“, book 5 in The Quantum Series, is now available in eBook and paperback formats!

Sheriff Peggy-Ann Muller suddenly found herself hip-deep in strange events – even stranger than usual… and skinheads too – did she mention the skinheads?

Something had stirred in the darkness on the remote, usually idyllic Terran colony of Deanna – something Nazi… And it only seemed to be getting worse!

Nobody could say when it started, or how, but something had changed. Without being noticed, hate had come to Deanna and made a nest there… and a terrible plot was about to hatch!

The quirky residents of the third-rate colony faced a challenge unlike any they had seen before. Was there still time to stop it? Only Time would tell if they were up for it.

“Prodigal Sun” is the fifth title in the Quantum Series by Christina Engela.

“Engela’s latest work is packed with humour, challenging ideas, and science-fiction on a grand scale. It transports readers to a truly original world, filled with bizarre and memorable characters. It tackles social issues while reading like a Terry Pratchett, with some western and sci-fi elements to boot.” – Matthew ‘Sand-Storm’ Fick, journalist.

The Quantum Quadrilogy : What Readers Can Expect

As most of my readers will be aware, since 2016 I’ve been promoting the next span of upcoming titles in the Quantum Series! Through various updates and newsletters, I’ve kept you all informed about my progress in writing these next four books – more or less simultaneously – give or take a couple of breaks in between!

As you can imagine, it has been a gargantuan task! I’m happy to tell you that the first two, “Prodigal Sun” (published February 23, 2017) and the second “High Steaks“, are already available (published in June 2017)! The third title in what I’ve come to call “the Quantum Quadrilogy”, “Underground Movement”, is still in the works.

[NOTE: This article has been updated since it was originally published to reflect the addition of a fourth title to this next span of Quantum Series stories! Also, since this article is about a span of books within a series, some of which have yet to be published, be prepared to see it being referred to a lot in the future as it comes to subsequent release dates of the next three titles!]

In the meantime, I thought I would go into a little more detail about the story being told across these four books – “Prodigal Sun“, “High Steaks“, “Underground Movement” and “Moon Jockeys” – books 5, 6, 7 and 8 in the Quantum Series! More

State Capture – an inspired poem about current events!

What can I say? The world has been turned upside down – and inspiration struck!

State Capture

Goodbye Obama, farewell to sanity
Sieg heil, Hair Twitler – hello depravity!

Thank you, Electoral College, so long popular vote,
It’s been nice while it lasted, not as long as we’d hoped!
You might as well take a bow
‘Cos “Trump is our president now!”

Huddled masses rejected, immigrants spurned;
Pogroms revisited, mosques and synagogues burned.
Goodbye democracy, farewell apple pie!
Lady Liberty might just as well lay down and die!

O’Bannon dictates Nazi doctrine into policy
Taking a blow torch to the Liberty Tree,
While Orange Hitler kills the American Dream
The GOP tells the people to ‘take one for the team’.

How low can we go – how much worse can it get?
On the pretext to “make America Great”, instead her sun has set!
Where did that just, fair, libertarian secular spirit go
That once made brave America so?

Instead of an elected leader in the White House, a POTUS,
See what a flawed, usurped democracy has got us –
There sits a dictator and his cronies atop a Tower,
Plotting theocracy, planning walls – and his next golden shower.

How long will this nightmare carry on?
How long before all hope is gone?
How long will Hair Twitler reign –
And will he get out what he Putin?

So now the world waits – and worries, to see
What he will get up to next, the new fuhrer
– A malicious inept clown who has the nuclear codes
Yet can’t even acquit himself on Twitter.

Executive Orders to the left, threats and intimidation to the right,
The puppet prince slashes at civil rights with all his might!
Hello oppression and inequality, hello World War Three!
Goodbye America, goodbye… Land of the Free.

New Release: “The Pink Community – The Facts” Second Edition!

New release: “The Pink Community – The Facts” – Second Edition! Back in 2009 when I was in full swing of my human rights advocacy and running two LGBT rights groups (SA GLAAD and ECGLA), I put together an online information resource which mainly consisted of useful quotes and links to articles online.

As an activist who campaigned a lot on social media against bigotry in form of homophobia and transphobia, these links came in handy to post as replies to enraged bigots, rather than typing out lengthy replies each time! Instead, the link would manifest with a reference to a useful scientific or medical article that would invalidate the bigot’s viewpoint, and they would be left there, seething, embarrassed, with egg on their faces!

Gradually this list grew until it migrated from a text file I kept on my PC, into a Word document – and then, when I started my blog “Sour Grapes: The Fruit of Ignorance”, I dedicated several pages to it there. Later, in about 2012, I migrated it to my official author site, where it still lurks, as a free resource for human rights advocacy. This allowed for page hierarchies rather than just a huge cluster (or clutter!) of pages on a site! More

How About Those Strato-Penguins, Eh?

Just in case anyone has been wondering about those strato-penguins I keep mentioning in the Quantum Series, here is a brief description about these strange (understatement) animals native to Deanna:

Strato-penguins  are the only high-flying native Deannan bird species. These unusual creatures fly using  a remarkable natural rocket propulsion (that the author hasn’t quite figured out yet – but it’s likely caused by a diet of Rabid Beans or high-octane beetles or something).  They are known to explode if they stray too high up in the outer atmosphere. Strato-penguins were named for their uncanny resemblance to Earth penguins, but with two main differences: Strato-Penguins are a good deal faster, and penguins don’t explode like that at high altitude.

There are many flocks of strato-penguins on Deanna, which for many generations have been on a perpetual high-altitude journey around the globe. These flocks fly westwards as a rule, and are seldom if ever known to land. In fact, the birds are permanently airborne. They absorb water from the air, catch food in the air, and even mate while airborne – in fact, their young are carried internally and ejected from the father’s brooding cavity as soon as the egg shell begins to crack. The chick is essentially  – er, air born  – that is, dropped into the world like a very small feathery bomb shedding shell fragments.

The chick immediately turns to face the correct direction, more by aerodynamic design than intention, and then instinctively opens its beak (most likely to scream in terror as it sees the vast new world from a few thousand feet up). The opened beak allows the air-stream to enter its complicated network of organic plumbing and start up the creature’s natural pulse-jet engine. If the process fails to start, then the chick would plummet to its death, essentially eliminating weak genes from the species. Sometimes, on rare occasions, something might go horribly wrong with a strato-penguin chick’s plumbing – and on its first go, it would mark its passing with a bright fireball above the clouds, followed by a small thunderclap. If it does fire, and after a few minutes of figuring out how its beak, stubby wings, those flappy things at the end of its legs, and tail control surfaces worked, the new-born strato-penguin soars back up to rejoin its flock – more often referred to as a ‘squadron’.

There are as yet no known illustrations of a strato-penguin, so if you would like to send me your sketches of what you think a strato-penguin looks like – and have them featured on my website, please feel free to get creative! You can send them to christinaengela@gmail.com ! Happy drawing! 🙂
